SUSTCOMM 160/LANDARCH 160 – Lecture Series in Landscape Architecture, Regional Planning, and Sustainability: This course offers students front-row access to some of the evolving conversations shaping landscape architecture, urban design, and regional planning through the Zube Lecture Series. Each week, the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (LARP) hosts select scholars, designers, and practitioners – local and international – to share their work and ideas. The class component comprises students meeting to reflect, discuss, and unpack some concepts highlighted during the lectures. The course is designed to be a welcoming entry point for undergraduates across all majors with no particular experience or training required. By the end of the semester, students become familiar with some of the key questions driving the field and the many ways designers and planners shape the world around us. Recordings of Zube lectures are available on the LARP YouTube channel (Fall 2025, Spring 2026, Fall 2026).

FYS 191 – Reimagining Sustainable Futures: This course explores how innovative ideas, emerging technologies, and bold thinking can transform the world. It focuses on actively contributing to a better future, whether through environmental justice, technology, or social impact. Through engaging discussions, collaborative projects, and hands-on activities, students deepen their understanding of sustainable development while honing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The course introduces tools and strategies used by planners, designers, scientists, and activists globally, encouraging creative and meaningful learning within the classroom setting. The course also fosters peer connections, helping students to acclimate to college life at UMass Amherst while developing essential personal and academic skills for success. Designed to refine interests and shape goals, this course lays the foundation for future academic and professional achievements (Fall 2024, Fall 2025).
